Venezuela receives strong support from the British public in dispute with Colombia

Over 50 people have signed a statement in support of Venezuela after the out-going Colombian President, Alvaro Uribe, accused Venezuela of supporting terrorism.  Politicians, trade unionists, academics and members of the public were quick to show their solidarity with Venezuela after President Uribe's remarks led to a fresh dispute.

Dr Francisco Dominguez said that these new developments, together with the US plans to build new military bases in Colombia, threatened to "destabilise Latin America".  Former MP and Chair of the Labour Friends of Venezuela, Colin Burgon, called upon the international community and the British government to "reject Uribe's crude and ill-intentioned escalation of the tensions between Venezuela and Colombia.  Jennie Bremner, Unite the Union Assistant General Secretary, praised Venezuela as a "beacon of social progress" and called for its national sovereignty to be respected.
