Venezuela Shows Biggest Reduction in Inequality, Says ECLAC
According to studies by the UN’s Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC), Venezuela ranks first in the list of 12 Latin American countries that have reduced inequalities amongst their citizens.
This information was issued by the ECLAC’s Executive Secretary Alicia Bárcena, who said that the reduction in inequality has amounted to a 15 percent drop in the distribution gap of per capita income.
“Venezuela, Bolivia, Brazil, Costa Rica and Uruguay are the main countries to lower inequality (…) This region has progressed a lot in everything related to protecting the revenues of low-income people so that they can access food. Latin America has also progressed a lot regarding children’s food, since they represent the next generation, the future,” she added.
In addition, Bárcena said that states must be less bureaucratic and worry more about the public’s well-being and the universality of rights. “It is irrelevant to succeed in the private or public sector. What is important is that people can access education, food, health, social benefits and incomes worldwide,” she concluded.
