Venezuela and Ireland strengthen historical and cultural ties through Daniel Florencio O'Leary

The Venezuelan Ambassador to London has visited the city of Cork, the birthplace of Daniel Florencio O'Leary, aide-de-camp to Simon Bolivar in the campaign for South American Independence.

The Mayor of Cork, Dara Murphy, cordially received Ambassador Samuel Moncada to the southern Irish city and also took the opportunity to celebrate the bicentenary of Venezuela's independence and the historical ties that unite Cork and Venezuela.

"O'Leary is a historical symbol that illustrates our common ties in the present and encourages us to think creatively in the future about joint strategies of cooperation and fraternity", the Mayor of Cork affirmed.

Ambassador Moncada was invited to sign the honorary visitors’ book in the city of Cork in recognition of the historical relationship of brotherhood that united Simon Bolivar and Daniel Florencio O’Leary.

The ceremony was also attended by representatives of the Daniel Florencio O'Leary Association, including two of O'Leary's direct descendants, Michael and Peter O'Leary, who founded the association and, even in their 80s, still manage to keep the group active.  Also present were Geraoid O’Mannan, executive member of the Daniel Florencio O'Leary Association and Robert Navan, coordinator of Red Venezuela in Ireland.
