Unasur decision obliges Spain to limit attendance of Lobo to Summit with EU

Caracas, May 06. ABN.- Spain has decided to limit the participation of the Honduran ruler Porfirio Lobo to the Summit of the European Union with Latin America and the Caribbean (EU-LAC), after a decision made by most South American countries of not attending the encounter if the current President of Honduras was invited.

The countries member of the Union of South American Nations (Unasur) reiterated, during the last meeting carried out in Argentina, that they do not recognize the legitimacy of President Lobo because he was elected in the middle of a dictatorship after overthrowing the President Jose Manuel Zelaya.

On Thursday, the Honduran foreign minister Mario Canahuati informed to a local radio station that Lobo will be only present in a forum between Central America and the European Union in Madrid, but not at the main summit between Latin America and the European bloc due to the rejection of South America.

The Summit between Central America and the European Union is scheduled for May 19, which is one day after the Summit between Latin America and the European group.

Most of Unasur countries expressed that they would change their position towards Lobo only if the latter recognizes the political rights of the ousted president.
