2,000 Alternative Media Outlets Exemplify Freedom of Speech in Venezuela
According to figures provided by the independent organization Movimiento para el Periodismo Necesario (MPN, Movement for Needed Journalism), more than 2,000 community-based and alternative media outlets have been created in Venezuela during President Hugo Chávez’s 11 years in power. The MPN is an independent organization founded by Venezuelan journalists.
Harim Rodríguez D’Santiago, MPN’s spokesperson, said that during this period more than 10,000 community leaders have been included in community-based and alternative media in Venezuela. Additionally, Rodríguez pointed out that despite the constant media attacks against President Hugo Chávez, in Venezuela no journalist has been ever jailed or assassinated for reporting news or opinions, whether for or against the government.
Rodríguez said that only three journalists are being prosecuted in Venezuela, and those for common criminal charges. “These journalists are in jailed for alleged crimes against the Penal Code. Their detention is not political persecution as it has been presented by some anti-government sectors”, said Rodríguez.
“Community-based and alternative media outlets have increased remarkably during this government. They have more contact with the government institutions and generate more real, valid and constructive criticisms that those presented by private, local and international newspapers, radios and TV stations,” emphasized Rodríguez.
