Venezuelan Embassy invited to the Highfield Community Centre en Leicester, England

The General Annual Meeting of the Highfield Community Centre had an international flavour this year. Alvaro Sanchez, Counsellor of the Venezuelan Embassy in London, was invited to address the meeting and speak about people’s power and community councils in Venezuela.

Mr. Priya Thamortheram, Head of the Centre, welcomed Sanchez and stressed the importance of strengthening the international links of the Highfield community with countries like Venezuela, which are empowering people at a grassroots level.

Sanchez spoke about the achievements of the Bolivarian Revolution and emphasized on the importance of community councils in the Venezuelan political process.

“I am delighted to see the high level of participation and involvement of this community through its community centre. In Venezuelan the Government is fully supporting similar initiatives by community councils”, said Sanchez who added: “there are 30 thousand community councils set up across Venezuela, and most of them are led by women”.

Highfields is a migrant community of 30 thousand people, located near the centre of Leicester.

Most of the neighbours make good use of the services offered by the community centre: educational courses, sporting facilities, after school programs and day-care.
