Minister Councellor of Brazil speaks about the Brazilian energy sector

The Venezuelan Embassy and the Windsor Energy Group (WEG) hosted the “Latin American and Energy Roundtable” conference at Bolivar Hall. This was to highlight the importance of energy sectors in Latin America.

The conference was divided into two panels of discussion, which included contributions from the ambassadors of Venezuela, Bolivia, Colombia, Cuba, Brazil and Mexico.

The Minister Councellor of Brazil, Flavio Marega, spoke about the petroleum and gas industry in Brazil and discussed the energy sector as a whole.

“Brazil has one of the largest energy matirx in the world with approximately 46% of it comprised of renewable sources,” said Marega.

He added: “this is due to the fact that Brazil has a large Hydro-electric system which accounts for approximately 82% of energy generation.”

Marega also discussed about how Brazil has a very diverse energy sector, 46% of which is renewable sources.

He also spoke about the Brazilian petroleum and gas industry. As of 2007 Brazil produced 1.935 million barrels of oil per day and consumed 1.820 million barrels. “As of March 2009 Brazil reached self sufficiency with production going above 2 million barrels per day. Brazil still imports oil and diesel”, Marega highlighted.

Marega spoke about biofuels in Brazil and how “in over the last 30 years one billion barrels of oil were saved thanks to the use of ethanol, which represents 8 years of present oil consumption”.

Finally, Marega pointed out that “sugar cane is by far the most productive, cost-efficient and carbon saving feedstock for biofuel production”.
