Evo Morales: purpose of military bases is to divide and place South American presidents in conflict with each other
Caracas, 28th Aug. ABN.- By installing new military bases in Colombian territory, the United Status is seeking to create an atmosphere of distrust between the Presidents of South America who seek unity and integration; the US is trying to get these countries into a public confrontation.
These were the words of Evo Morales, President of the Republic of Bolivia, in Bariloche, Argentina, during the special meeting of the Council of Heads of State and Governments in the Union of South American Nations (Unasur), called to discuss the installation of US military bases in Colombia.
“We do not want to be instruments of division in South America, nor to create distrust between our peoples. What we must put first is the enormous interest of our presidents and the support of our people to work for the unity of our region”, he stated.
In this respect, he recalled that the US empire has never wanted the unity of South America, and will never want it.
“We should recall that historically there has been constant US political and military intervention in our region, especially when there are governments that fight for their sovereignty; that intervention is reflected in invasions and coups”, he said.
He denounced the fact that anticommunist doctrines are always applied in order to persecute trade union leaders and rural workers who fight for their liberation and vindication; doctrines of counterinsurgency have been applied against social movements proposing profound social change; and anti-drugs policies have been orientated to accuse all those who do not bow to their instructions.
Morales underlined the fact that South America’s history during the colonial period is being repeated, because basically it is a question of the acts of an imperial power against the people of South America, over the control of their natural resources.
“The United States is using the fight against drugs in order to invade our land, but when as sovereign nations we decide to purchase equipment and anti-drug technology from another country, Washington is against it, and then says that we do not wish to cooperate, because we do not bow down to their imperialist policies”, argued Morales.
In this respect, he added that the United States has no right to cooperate in the fight against drugs in any Latin American country, because the drug problem originates in North America.
“There needs to be cooperation between ourselves, between responsible countries, to reduce this scourge, without any US military presence in our territory”, he said. Finally, he pointed out that if, in an effort to cooperate, Latin America were to decide to send troops to North American territory to control the circulation and production of drugs, the US government would simply not allow it.
