PRESS RELEASE BRITISH SOLIDARITY DELEGATION VISITS VENEZUELA
Between 14-23 August, 25 representatives of the British Venezuela Solidarity Campaign (VSC) visited Venezuela to see first hand the advances in democracy and social progress that have been made in 10 years of the Hugo Chavez-led government in the country. The delegates included representatives of trade unions, student groups, solidarity activists and others.
Commenting on the visit, VSC Treasurer James Fitzsimmons said, "This delegate was a unique, first-hand opportunity for people from across British society to see the reality of the progressive changes in Venezuela. Contrary to much media representation in Britain and the myths of the minority right-wing opposition within Venezuela, it is clear that social progress continues to advance in Venezuela."
Fiona Edwards, Secretary of Student Friends of Venezuela said, "This was my first visit to Venezuela and I was inspired by the social gains being made in the country. As a representative of Student Friends of Venezuela, I was particularly impressed by the increased access to free education and the new Education Law which will break down barriers to universal access. Venezuela is an inspiration to all of us who believe another world is possible."
Louise Cousins, Unite the Union National Executive Committee member and community worker added, "As a community development worker who supports and encourages communities to play an active role within society it was good to see Chavez using the same model. I look forward to watching the next 10 years of growth and development."
